Dynamics

In mastering, the overall dynamics of the song can be made more/less punchy, more glued together, and specific frequencies controlled for a balanced sound.

Tone

Through a combination of saturation, surgical, and broad EQ, your song's tone will be sculpted to achieve a full sounding tone which translates across all media.

Problem Solving

As the last stage of the production process, it is up to mastering to solve any potential issues in the audio (noise, sibilance, distortion, clicks, etc...)

Levels

While the loudness wars are over, your song should rival the levels of other commercial releases within your genre.

Common Mastering Questions

What's the difference between mixing and mastering?

Mastering involves working from a single, pre-mixed file and is a subtle art, making a combination of improvements and preparing the track for the final release medium. Mixing involves processing each individual element of the production, setting levels and adding effects.

What is and isn't possible during the mastering stage?

As mastering works from a pre-mixed track, I'll shape the tone, dynamics, clean up problem areas, and add clarity to the track. However, in mastering the individual instrument or vocal levels and effects cannot be changed, so please ensure you're satisfied with your mix prior to mastering.

What should I expect from the master?

Mastering can be as subtle or heavy-handed as needed, it is all a question of the quality of the original mix and musical judgment. In cases where the original mix is nearly on target, the result will be a series of very subtle improvements, whereas a mix that needs help will hear a big difference.

Why is a human better than e-mastering?

I love algorithms and think of intelligent mastering as a great tool but a computer doesn't have human, musical instincts, problem-solving, or intuition. My masters win against the robots 100% of the time.

I've read about specific loudness target levels for Spotify/YouTube etc... Explain

When comparing loudness levels, it is important to compare songs within the same platform.

Each platform has its own algorithm which adjusts the average level of every song transparently to ensure a more consistent listening experience.

Targeting these levels specifically is not ideal as we still want the song's level to match other current releases in the genre.

What it does mean is that we don't need to push the levels as much as we did in the past and can allow the song to retain more dynamics, punch, and low-end.
